Transformers: Age of Extinction Toys R Us Exclusive Kre-O Combiners, Grimstone, Volcanicon, Obsidian, and Lazerbolt

I really like these sets, but unlike previous combiner sets, they are not based on any existing characters. It honestly looks like a bunch of Hasbro employees took a bucket of Kre-O parts and a case of beer and just started putting characters together and then picked the ones they liked. The names are also interesting. Some names are great, while others are real head scratchers. Also interesting, I couldn’t find the faction of these on the package anywhere. The instructions have Grimstone and Lazerbolt as Autobots and Volcanicon and Obsidian as Decepticons. Not sure why they wouldn’t put that on the package

Grimstone Set

Mollox

Mollox is a great name. I really like him in both modes. I wish he were in G1 Swoop colors, as he would have made a perfect Swoop. I wonder…maybe they could do a G1 Dinobot combiner set. That would be awesome.

Ironeye

Another great name, Ironeye’s beast and robot modes really aren’t anything special. He’s supposed to be a T-Rex-like creature. If they had given him a set of dinosaur arms to put on instead of his robot arms he would be a lot better.

Crackback

Crackback is another good name. I don’t know what his beast mode is supposed to be. I hate when they use robot helmets as animal heads. The ones that are designed that way are fine, but the ones like these are terrible. Robot mode is nothing special. Hasbro has started going cheap on paint apps. Each of these sets have two with unpainted legs.

Iquanox

I love this name! Iquanox, like Crackack, is some kind of unidentifiable creature with a robot helmet for a head.

Grimstone

In combined mode, Grimstone looks pretty good. I like the wings. His left arm looks too big with the guns mounted on it, but it’s not too bad.

Volcanicon Set

Farside

I’m not sure if Farside is supposed to be any specific creature, but he certainly looks interesting with Klingon Bat’leths on him.

Power Surge

Power Surge’s creature mode is awesome. It’s vaguely like a Velociraptor. They did a really great job on his design. Robot mode is really plain.

Lugmutt

Again, no idea what his beast mode is supposed to be. Pretty cool looking though. Robot is nothing special.

Liftoff

Liftoff is not a bad name, but I would expect it for a jet or a helicopter. It doesn’t really work for a winged creature. He’s not bad looking, but he has these little wings that don’t belong on a beast mode. Just looks really odd. His robot mode looks nice with the wings.

Volcanicon

Volcanicon is an awesome name. He looks really great. I love the talons round his knees and the wings and Bat’leths on his back.

Obsidian Set

Freefall

This is my favorite of all four sets. Freefall’s beast mode looks awesome with the fangs in front, Wings, and long back legs making him look insect-like. He’s got great paint apps on his robot torso and legs. He really looks nice.

Hemocron

I assume Hemocron is supposed to be some kind of spider-like creature. Looks pretty cool. Robot mode is pretty plain.

Stronghorn

Stronghorn appears to be a Bat’leth headed beetle. I love the Bat’leth on his head in robot mode.

Bullwark

What the hell kind of name is Bullwark? I love the beast mode, the big red eyes make him look like an insect.

Obsidian

Obsidian looks great. I love the pinchers for feet they gave him. Not sure the Bat’leth on his head works, but otherwise I really like this one.

Lazerbolt Set

Freezeout

I have no idea what Freezeout is supposed to be. He’s not bad looking, but the blue blades on his arms look odd. I’d rather see them as plates on his back. Robot mode isn’t too bad.

Bullhorn

I really like his beast mode. The tale looks great with the claw at the end. Robot mode isn’t anything special.

Roadhound

Roadhound? Really? If he was a dog, that might not be bad, but I’m not even going to try to guess what he is supposed to be. He doesn’t look bad, but I’m not crazy about the clear helmet at all.

Floodgate

Floodgate has phasers for ears in beast mode. I don’t even have any words for this. It looks like they had run out of ideas and decided to do something that made no sense. What’s worse, he keeps them there in robot mode. I kind of like his name, but that’s about it.

Lazerbolt

I love his name and enormous gun. Not sure why he is the only combiner to have a gun. I like the spikes on his shoulders, but he’s really pretty unspectacular. He would look better with Freezeout’s gray helmet.
